Platelet Rich Plasma
What is PRP therapy for Hair Loss?
PRP is a simple and minimally invasive medical procedure performed in the office.
Platelets are equipped with potent proteins called Growth Factors that when released will accelerate new tissue regeneration and healing. Platelets also contain stem cells that will attract additional stem cells to the repair site.
What can PRP help treat?
Scientific studies have shown successful results in stimulating hair growth in men and women by stimulating dormant hair follicles to generate strong, thick, healthy hair.
PRP is also indicated as a natural approach to facial rejuvenation, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, promoting collagen production, improving tone, texture and boosting the overall quality of the skin
This type of regenerative therapy has been around for more than 30 years and has been successfully applied in the fields of orthopedics, ophthalmology, oral maxillofacial procedures, in cases of burn victims, and in many other ways, showing the powerful impact of PRP on wound healing and tissue reconstruction.
Are all PRP the same?
The answer is NO. It will depend on the specific kit and centrifuge the physician selects from the many available in the market. Different doctors use different protocols. This will influence the amount of platelets recovered from your blood sample and therefore the quality of the results.
What to expect the day of the procedure?
You will be at the office for approximately 2 hours, but you will have several breaks during the process.
The first step is obtaining your blood. Then your blood will be spun in a centrifuge, and finally, we will obtain a concentrated sample of your platelets in plasma that will be injected in the affected area.
The procedure is done under local anesthesia so you will be pain-free.
After the treatment is finished you will experience minimal to no downtime, and you will be able to resume all activities immediately.
What are the side effects of PRP therapy?
The fact that we use your own blood makes PRP a safe procedure with no risk of disease transmission and allergic reactions. You may notice mild to moderate redness and some tenderness in the treated area due to the injections that may take up to 48 hours to fade.
How long does it take to see the results?
PRP works by stimulating your body’s self-healing power.
The time it takes to see results is directly related to your body’s capacity to regenerate new tissue. We will measure the results every 3 months. In general, it will take 3-6 months to identify subtle improvements. After 6-12 months you will be able to appreciate the outcome in the mirror or in a photo.
How do we measure the results?
Dr. Veber can precisely measure your progress with a scientific instrument called HairCheck that provides quantitative evidence of the results of the treatment and will allow us to make the necessary adjustments to the therapy if needed.
Will I have to repeat the procedure?
You will require 3 treatments done 4 weeks apart to achieve the full potential of this approach. Patients results vary, and you will need to repeat the treatment yearly.
Patients interested in getting PRP combined with Extracellular Matrix products (BioD or ACell) will receive only one treatment every 9-18 months.
Who is a candidate?
The best way to find out if PRP is right for you is to have a free consultation with Dr Veber. She will take a detailed medical history and assess your specific condition and concern.
