What are dermal fillers?
The placement of dermal fillers is the second most commonly requested cosmetic procedure in the USA. It is a cost effective way to look refresh without surgery or downtime. Dermal fillers are soft, gel-like material that are injected under the skin to minimize the signs of aging (wrinkles, folds) and to add fullness in areas of volume loss.
What areas can be treated with dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers can address a number of common concerns including loss of volume in the mid-face, cheekbones, nasolabial folds and marionette lines (the creases that run from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth and from the corners of the mouth to the jaw line respectively), downturned oral commissures, enhancement of the lips, smoothing of lip lines, and rejuvenation of the hands.
What are fillers made of?
There are many types of fillers in the market: permanent, semi-permanent and temporary. One of the most common fillers used are temporary dermal fillers made of hyaluronic acid. These fillers are the ideal choice for patients who will try this modality of facial rejuvenation for the first time. Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring substance found in all living organisms. It’s major role is to keep the skin plump and hydrated. When injected as a dermal filler, provides a natural appearance that lasts 6-12 months or longer before the body gradually absorbs the particles.Hyaluronic Acid fillers have the advantage of being minimally invasive procedures and of yielding immediate results.
What will happen during the treatment?
After cleaning the treatment area, you will receive anesthesia (topical or local). Many filler products also contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic, which is intended to help minimize discomfort during and after your treatment. Redness of the area, bruising, swelling, tenderness, are all expected after the injections, but they will be temporary and they will subside after a couple of days. You will be able to go back to your normal activities right after treatment.
What are the post procedure recommendations?
During the first 48 hours after your treatment, do not massage or rub the treated area. Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. in a sauna or by sunbathing) or extreme cold.
How long will the effects of dermal fillers last?
It depends on the product, the area of treatment, and the patient. Generally speaking, the denser the product is and the more deeply it is injected, the longer it will last. Hyaluronic acid fillers last between 6-12 months.
